Lifestyle in New York

The City of New York is worldwide recognized by the fast and cosmopolitan lifestyle of its inhabitants.

The people move around the city with efficiency and dynamism. This trend is understandable considering that more than 8 million people live and work in this city that never sleeps.

New York City is also called the capital of the world, in reference to its ethnically varied population. People from all the countries can be found in New York, so plenty of different languages can be heard on each corner and it is common to find shops, restaurants or social institutions related to a certain community. As a result, racial and religious tolerance is innate among New Yorkers.

Other remarkable aspect of New York’s lifestyle is its fashionable character. It can definitely be catalogued as a trendy city, where everything from its buildings to the clothes for sale is a piece of design. In Manhattan, stores of the most famous designers (such as Carolina Herrera, Versace and Manolo Blahnik among others) could be found and department stores (which are very popular) have an awesome variety of national and imported products.

But dynamism and glamour have their costs, and therefore New York is a pretty expensive city. It is the most expensive city in the United States and it is among the 12 more expensive cities in the world, but employees here have also one of the highest gross earnings in the world. In consequence, the consumption and life standards are high.

Regarding public security, New York has experienced a great evolution on the last 20 years with a huge descend of the crime rate. The streets of Manhattan have a strong police patrolling presence and neighborhoods in the five boroughs have a local police station. However, as in any mega city, it is advisable to keep certain basic caution measures such as watching money and personal belongings closely and avoiding isolated places especially at night.
