The Museum of Sex is an institution dedicated to explore the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality.
Its building is located in New York Fifth Avenue, in a zone formerly called the “Tenderloin” because of being a neighborhood of bordellos, dance halls, saloons and theatres all along the 19th century.
Opened on October 2002, along its years of history the Museum of Sex has generated several exhibitions and virtual installations all of which try to extend an open vision over sex and inform about different cultures´ sexual habits. In order to achieve that mission, said collections have always included material and artifacts from different continents, cultures, time periods and media.
The Museum of Sex has a permanent collection of over 15,000 artifacts that consists in works of art, photography, clothing and costumes, technological inventions and historical ephemera. Additionally, the museum houses a research library as well as an extensive multimedia library and a collection of objects that would have been destroyed in ancient times due to their link with sex. Said collections cover different topics such as gay and lesbian, pornography and sexual work among other subjects.
Even though the Museum presents contents in an educational format, it is intended for adult public.
