The World Trade Center was a complex of commercial multinational firms. The icon of the complex were the Twin Towers, two identical 110 stories buildings that were blank of the planes in the suicide attack of September 11, 2001.
On the former location of the complex, The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are building a memorial place and a museum to honor the thousands of people who died in the attacks of February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001 to the WTC.
The World Trade Center Memorial consists in two pools (nearly one-acre size each) set within the footprints of the Twin Towers. Each pool has a waterfall cascading down their sides. This is be the biggest manmade waterfalls in the USA and thus a powerful reminder of the Twin Towers and the victims of the attacks.
Around the edges of the pools, the names of the nearly 3,000 individuals who died in the September 11 attacks and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing will be inscribed.
This design is the result of a creative competition, where more than 5200 proposals from 63 nations were presented.
Surrounding the pools, a Memorial Plaza filled with nearly 400 trees will create a quiet space separating the memorial from the sights and sounds of the surrounding city.
The museum will feature interactive exhibits including artifacts, photographs, audio and video tapes, personal effects and memorabilia, words of remembrance, recorded testimonies, digital files and websites related to the WTC history and the attacks suffered. It will also house an auditorium for public programming.
Visitors will have the possibility to descend alongside the “Survivor’s Stairs”, the last standing vestige of the original World Trade Center which provided a route of escape for many survivors that September 11.
