5 Tips to Live in NYC on a Budget

New York is one of the most visited cities in the world. It’s also a place where people go to live out their most extravagant dreams. We all know that the city isn’t cheap, but you don’t have to let New York City’s expensive price tag stop you from living out your Big Apple fantasies.

There are plenty of ways to live in New York while being on a budget.

Live in A Cheaper Area

In NYC, it is hard to find a safe place to rent an apartment for under $1,000. Nevertheless, there are areas in NYC that are more affordable than others. Manhattan is not one of those places; remove it from your list of options. Narrow your search to locations on the upper-east side, especially near 2nd Ave, Midtown, and some of the NYC boroughs.  You can find some affordable housing options in these locations, especially some for under $1,500 a month.

If you don’t mind commuting, New Jersey and Philadelphia have plenty of affordable housing options, and have easily accessible metro systems that go right into New York.

Cheap Eats

It’s a lot cheaper to grocery shop in the bronx than other New York City areas. Buy the most expensive and important groceries at bronx grocery stores. Additionally, don’t be afraid to find basic supplies at superstores like Target.

You can also use grocery delivery services like Peapod and AmazonFresh to search for discounted groceries online. Walmart, Walgreens, Thrive Market, Jet, and World Market are other affordable online stores to buy groceries. Many of these places offer free shipping once you spend a certain amount.

When eating out, your best bet is pizza and bagels, because you can always find cheap pizza and bagels in New York. Also make sure to take advantage of lunch and breakfast deals. Chinatown also has an abundance of delicious and cheap foods.

Coupons

Groupon is one of the leading coupons and discounts companies. It provides savings for everything from electronics to gardening tools. Visit the Groupon page of your favorite store to find daily and weekly coupons.

Use these discounts whenever you shop online or in-stores, especially when buying luxury items like Shari’s Berries. The more you utilize these coupons, the more you’ll save on everyday items.

Free Events

New York is always busy with some event, whether it’s a gallery opening or a performance in a park. Use sites like Nifty NYC and Skint for listings of cheap and free stuff going on around New York.

Museums often have Pay What You Wish days. These days let you visit some of the most popular New York museums by paying whatever you can afford for admission.  Visit NYC Arts’ website for a listing of Pay What You Wish days.

Here are some other important free events to note:

●       Central Park Conservancy has 8 free tours a year
●       Grand Central Terminal has 2 free tours a year
●       Bryant Park hosts free weekly outdoor movies
●       Shakespeare in the Park gives out free tickets

Shop Flea Markets, Thrift Stores, and Clearance

Avoid impulse buys by only shopping when you need something. Do not be afraid to buy clothing from discount stores like Burlington Coat Factory or Ross Dress for Less. Also shop more expensive stores, but only the clearance aisles, especially after the price has been marked down twice.

Flea markets and thrift stores are also ideal places to shop for unique clothing and apartment items. Use NYC’s flea market listing to know when the next one happens near you.
